Airline-Approved Carriers
"Airline-approved" isn't a formal certification — it means the carrier meets the size and feature requirements of a specific airline. Since these requirements vary, a carrier that's approved for one airline may not work for another.
In-Cabin Carrier Requirements (General)
Most U.S. airlines require in-cabin carriers to fit under the seat and have the following:
- Soft-sided construction that can compress slightly to fit the space
- Maximum dimensions around 17-18" long x 11-12" wide x 10-11" high (varies by airline)
- Adequate ventilation on at least two sides
- A leak-proof bottom
- A secure closure (zippered or latched)
Cargo Crate Requirements (General)
For cargo travel, airlines typically require:
- Hard-sided construction with metal door and secure latches
- "Live Animal" labels on the exterior
- Ventilation on multiple sides
- An absorbent lining
- Food and water dishes accessible from outside without opening the door
- Your contact information on the crate
Sizing Right
Your cat needs enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Too big isn't necessarily better — airlines may reject oversized carriers, and too much space lets the cat slide around during turbulence. Measure your cat (length from nose to base of tail, height from floor to top of ears) and compare to carrier interior dimensions.
Tip: Buy the carrier well before your flight and let your cat get used to it. Don't wait until the night before to discover your cat won't fit or that the carrier doesn't meet your airline's requirements.
