Airbnb Rules for Cats
Airbnb can be a great option for traveling with cats — a full apartment or house gives your cat more space than a hotel room and often feels more like home. But the rules are set by individual hosts, and undisclosed pets can get you kicked out and charged.
Finding Cat-Friendly Listings
Use the "Pets allowed" filter when searching on Airbnb. This shows properties where the host has indicated pets are welcome. But "pets allowed" sometimes means dogs only — always message the host before booking to confirm that cats are specifically welcome.
Disclosure Is Non-Negotiable
Always disclose that you're bringing a cat, even if the listing says pets are allowed. Some hosts have additional rules — no pets on furniture, pets must be crated when unattended, etc. If you show up with an undisclosed cat and the host objects, you have no recourse and may lose your booking and your money.
Potential Issues
- Damage deposits: Some hosts increase the security deposit for guests with pets
- Cleaning fees: An additional pet cleaning fee is common
- Scratching: Cats can damage furniture, curtains, and carpet. Bring a portable scratching pad and keep your cat supervised or in a designated room when you can't watch them
- Allergens: Future guests may have cat allergies. Some hosts don't allow cats specifically for this reason
Being a Good Guest
Leave the property as you found it. Clean the litter box area thoroughly, vacuum any fur, and report any damage honestly. Good pet-guest behavior keeps listings pet-friendly for the next traveler.
