Multi-Day Road Trip Planning
Multi-day trips require more planning than single-day drives, but the fundamentals are the same — you're just repeating a daily routine over several days.
Setting Daily Limits
Six to eight hours of driving per day is a good maximum for most cats. Some seasoned travelers can handle more; first-time travelers may do better with four to five hours. Build buffer time into your schedule — you'll always take longer than you think.
Hotel Routine
Each evening, set up the cat's space in the hotel room immediately upon arrival: litter box in the bathroom, food and water in a quiet corner, familiar bedding. Let the cat out of the carrier and give them time to explore the room before you do anything else. Most cats will hide under the bed initially and emerge within an hour or two.
Morning Routine
Give your cat time to eat, drink, and use the litter box before loading up. Don't rush the morning departure — a cat that's had breakfast and used the bathroom will travel more comfortably than one that was scooped into the carrier at dawn.
Day-to-Day Improvement
Most cats get better at car travel with each passing day. Day one is usually the worst; by day three or four, many cats have accepted the routine and settle in the carrier more quickly. If your cat is getting worse each day rather than better, consider whether the daily driving stints are too long.
